Subject : Nappy rash from reusable nappies?

Lily has had bad nappy rash for a few weeks now, so I stopped using my bumgenius nappies and went back to disposables so that I could use the nappy rash cream. It seemed to get better, so I went back to using the bum genius nappies again but the nappy rash flared up just as bad! It was cracked and very sore. Now the nappy rash has cleared up again I am a bit reluctant to start using the bum genius again incase her nappy rash comes back! Do you think it could have been the nappy? I wondered if the nappies had a build up of soap powder in them and perhaps that was what caused it! Anyway, advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Hiya, yes I think a build up of powder can cause nappy rash, cant think what else it would be. I would suggest doing a strip wash on them to get rid of any residue.

Instructions here :-)

The other thing it could be is a sensitivity to fleece, which some babies do get. If stripping the nappies doens't work then you could try using paper liners so the fleece isn't touching her skin and see if that helps.

or it could be your washing powder, i can wash pippa's clothes in persil non bio but if i use it on her nappies her skin gets sore and she develops what look like blisters, tried morrisons own brand non bio and she's fine with that, and seen as it gets our clothes clean just as well as persil so have switched to using it. might be worth trying any way, hope you get something sorted

Thank you for the replies. I am going to put all the nappies in the wash and do what you suggested Mousenose. Bedhead - we were using the liners and we thought it was them that caused it so stopped using them! I use Fairy Non-bio (or persil non-bio)but the packet is almost empty so will try Tesco own brand when I go shopping this week. Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again. x

i'm sure i read somewhere (and i'm pretty sure i'm not making this up) that fairy has something in it to make everything soft that doesn't wash out of nappies very easily, i wonder if it could be this that's in the nappies that's causing a rection between it and her wee that's upseting her skin dose that even make sense

Our real nappy project officer recommends using half the usual amount of detergent when cleaning nappies. You could maybe try that to stop it building up again.

I spent my day off re-washing all the nappies and then putting them on a rinse cycle until I saw no more bubbles! Lily's bum is looking better so am going to try using them again. x

i use persil non bio on 2 babies now and it seems ok but every baby is different. My first one girl had lots of nappy rash actually looking back i think she was prone to thrush actually so watch out for that with the broken skin etc. Now have a boy and dont do anything different and he is pretty good so its hard to know. I would try a few things though as its worth keeping with it if it works but maybe intermixing with the odd disposable wouldn't hurt. We usually put a disposable on at night definately.

Hi, my LO has just had bad nappy rash...
Things I wondered about were...
Washing powder (recently changed), paper liner (just started using Mothercare brand), disposable I'd used at night (started using shops own brand), diet (he is 10mths so trying new foods)...

I stopped using the paper liners & cut out fruit from his diet & smoothered him in Sudocrem & went back to Pampers at night...it has cleared up so I introduced the shop brand disposable (hasn't come back) & have introduced small amount of fruit...some sore bits now & again but not as bad, I will try the liner again in a few weeks as he is teething so that could cause it.

One of my sisters had reactions to fruit (due to acidity) & paper liners (prob chemicals used in production) so that's why tried the changes I did.
Hope your LO's peachy gets peachy again!
xxx

I don't think the liners I used helped (Mothercare ones) but we think the Tesco swim nappies we use for our sunday swimming jolly have been making it worse. Went back to using huggies little swimmers and have noticed her bum is less red this week after swimming! Planning to put her back in the bum genius tomorrw while I'm at home ...fingers crossed all is ok! x
