Subject : Bottles on the go!

Hi!

I was just after a bit of advice on making bottles up when i'm out with lo. He is only 6 days old so havent tried it yet!!

I was wondering if its best to take a made up bottle with me and heat it up somewhere if in a cafe etc, or should i take a thermos of boiling water and stick a made up bottle in that or make up a fresh bottle from that boiling water and hope that it cools quickly!!

Any advice greatly received!!!

ARGH BE just ate my reply!!!

Basically there are several ways:

1. Take the water in the bottle and warm it somewhere (though this relies on you finding somewhere when you need it!) then add the powder.
2. Take some water in a flask and add the milk powder to that in the bottle.
3. Or, take water in the bottle, warm using flask water and add powder.

The Tommee Tippee powder pots and insulated bags are great - we just put the cooled but still quite warm water in the bottle, put it in the bag and take the powder in the pots. By the time we need it it's the right temp.

It's a bit like a military operation isn't it!?!

Hi there

Congrats on the lo.

One other option is ready made cartons. They aren't cheap, but are very practical as you don't have to worry about water etc...the only thing you might need to do is warm it up slightly if lo prefers warm milk.

I make up my bottles in the morning and keep them in the fridge. I then take them out in a tommee tippee insulated bag and warm them up with boiling water from my Fisher Price warming flask. For me this works best as the Aptamil Easy Digest milk really doesn't mix well in lukewarm water and it took Roslyn a long time to get into a stable routine and cooling a bottle was far more difficult than warming one up for me.

Good luck
Sandra

Hi there.... Im also a bit blind when it comes to this!

I have the tommee tippee powder pots, the insultated travel bags and the tommee tippee flask but dont know how to do things! There is so much conflicting advice its difficult to work out whats for the best!

Can someone tell me they manage to dry the powder pots after they have been sterilised before puttin the powder in?
And also is it ok to steralise a bottle and put the teat and lid on empty to use with the ready made cartons?

Hi

It's absolutely fine to put the sterilised teat and lid onto a bottle for use with ready made cartons. Regarding drying the powder pots I never worked that one out either Surprised))

tbh I don't sterilise the pots as the powder isn't sterile anyway! I find it best to air dry them but you could possibly use clean kitchen towel?

I take the powder and room temperature water ready to mix at feed time! I am lucky as my lo takes the milk at room temerpature as I have never warmed it for her so she doesn't know any different!

hi, if ur using tommee tippee bottles then u can get milk powder dispensers that fit inside them, saves room in the change bag. however u do need to sterilize them because the milk sn't sterilized so stops cross contamination. u can dry them with a clean piece of kitchen paper to ensure they are completely dry, if they are even slightly moist then this will breed bacteria in the powder milk when it makes contact.

How do I clean and sterilise Milk Powder Dispensers?

Milk powder dispensers should be washed and sterilised just like your bottles. You can then leave them to air dry, or use a clean piece of kitchen paper or a clean tea towel. The formula milk powder is not sterile, which is why you are recommended to make up feeds with freshly boiled water that has been allowed to cool for 30 minutes.[i/]

i always make ds's feeds up in the morning, by boiling the kettle and pouring the right amount of boiled water into his sterilized bottles, i put the lid and teat on them and then as and when he wants a feed i add the milk powder. if we're going out i put the milk powder into one of the bottles in a dispenser so it's separate form the water.

hope this helps

i've never warmed ds formula milk, even tho he is mixed fed he's not fussed what temp it is. it's entirely up to u if u warm it, usually babies that have been breastfed prefer warm milk as its same temp as the breastmilk, but babies who have never been breast fed tend not to mind as they've never had it warm if that ùmakes sense, obv there are exceptions to the rule but if u plan on only bottle feeding there shldn't be any reason to warm the bottles as baby wont know any different xx
