Subject : gripe water
I've just bought gripe water as he is now 1 month old and just wondering if anyone has any tips?It says it is to be given during or after feeding but would it work if I gave it before feeding?I'd never get it down him aftert feeding as he is always knocked out and I just tried stopping half way through and giving it to him but that wasn't very successful as most of it was sput out and then he didn't want any more milk?
I can't put it in his milk because he has colief in his milk or I suppose I could stop this and just use the gripe water. He spends most of the time making the weirdest noises <cross between a trumpet and an elephant> and wriggling even when sleeping and i'm trying to help him get rid of it so we can both get more than 2 hrs sleep at a time.

My lo didn't like gripe water so I used infacol instead which helped! You can give that before a feed!

I give T gripe water AFTER his feed - I find Infacol and Detinox more preventative but when they don't work, I find gripe water definitely the best for getting rid of wind when it comes!
Good luck xxx

Hi,
Ditto with the infacol, lo's been on it since week one and still has it before every other feed. We tried gripe water a couple of times but he didn't really like it so only used it when all else failed but we only got a couple of goes before having to throw the bottle so gave in. Infacol is about a pound cheaper in Home Bargains btw.
Also, what bottles do you use? We had the Avent ones which were good but found that the Dr Brown ones helped his wind a great deal (give them a good couple of days to have effect) and we now use the MAM bottles which have a similar valve system but are easier to clean and he also seems to drink the milk better/quicker so he doesn't fall asleep on the bottle so much.
Oh, and when we did do the gripe water we unscrewed the teat off the bottle and popped it in there to get him to take it - the spoon was an unmitigated disaster!

I think before would be ok. We used Infacol for ages but i got fed up doing it before every feed. We got Gripe water cos i liked the fact they can have it whenever. If Beth was irritable and i thought she had wind of tummy ache i just gave her a dose and i think it helped.

Sorry to butt in with more questions but i was thinking of trying gripe water as infacol doesnt seem to help at all. I really need it for the night feed / dream feed. If i give Theo a dream feed at about 10.30 / 11 i can get him to not feed again until 7am but.... he gets such bad wind I'm then up most of the night comforting him as he is wriggling and slamming his legs on the mattress and eventually farting! But i cannot for the love of god get him to burp after his dream feed. All other feeds he burps alot after and clearly he needs to with this last feed, only problem is he's so sleepy I can't get it out of him. If i don't dream feed, I still have the same problem as even doing a night feed he falls asleep while drinking so I still can't burp him. So would gripe water help with this? ie are the results immediate?
thanks!!!

The couple of times we managed to get it down lo I seem to remember it being very effective. We used it along with the infacol so we'd infacol him then feed him and then if he was struggling we'd gripe water the badger. It seemed to work til he decided that gripe water was not going past his lips.
To get the gripe water in we had to unscrew the cap/teat and pop the dose in there as it was even more unsuccessful trying to get the spoon in his mouth. Gripe water everywhere there was. Hopefully Theo is a bit more accommodating!
When Theo is wriggling and slamming is he crying too? Our lo is a bit active and grunty after his 5am feed but we've learnt to ignore him as he's not crying and he sorts himself out eventually! It is hard to block the little noises out though.
Hope he gets burping soon and you get some sleep x

You could try putting him on his tummy over your knees, even tho hes asleep it might help shift the wind, this sometimes helped for my LO altho i ended up not burping her after her dreamfeed as she never brought anything up anyway! BTW i used a syringe from the infacol to give the gripe water - much easier and you can do it whilst they are asleep.
