Subject : A word of hope...

Just thought I'd post a word of hope for anyone who's had a prem baby and worried about another one. My son was born at 33 weeks after I'd had pre-eclampsia for 3 weeks when I was 19. It was a very traumatic birth and I had a placental abruption which meant he was starved of oxygen and born very poorly. At 4 days old, he was given 10% chance of living and had one last chance of survival. He was placed on an ECMO machine which helps the heart and lungs to rest and mature as if they are still in the womb. After a lot of set backs including septicemia and a bleed to the brain, he came home 8 days before his due date.

He is now 12 years old and is a happy and healthy boy with no major health problems. He does have asthma and allergies such as hayfever but so do I and my dad so not sure if he would have had it anyway! The experience left me so traumatised that I swore I would never go through that again! I'm now 34 weeks pregnant and have to honestly say that apart from morning sickness have had a perfect pregnancy! This pregnancy wasn't planned so I was very shocked and took a while to get used to the idea and the worry but have been closely monitored all the way through.

My only regret..........waiting 12 years before having another one! I have to say that just because you have one traumatic pregnancy, doesn't mean you will definitely have another one as I always thought.

My consultant has even said that if I continue the way I am then I may even be able to have a natural birth. Hope this gives a little ray of hope to anyone who has had a prem baby and is worried about having another one...:D

Hi ladies...sorry for the delay in replying and thanks for your well wishes. I had Jack Owen at 39 weeks exactly by natural delivery with only paracetamol and gas & air! After having a general last time and not knowing anything about it, I was determined to go as natural as possible! Crazy I know... lol It was such a positive experience and was so different to last time. My consultant was right in saying that it was possible to have a natural, straight forward delivery even after such a traumatic one before....

Jack weighed 7lb 1oz and we got out of hospital (together) the next day. Hubby and I are so thrilled that we're already talking about baby number 3 with confidence. Please dont be put off after one traumatic birth as I'm proof it can go right...

Kirsty and Jack Owen (11 weeks) x
