Subject : How do we know it is safe?
I am having a hair treatment done next week. I have asked for a list of the ingriedients, so that I can google them and see if they are safe or not. Problem is google isnt actually giving me many results!
Can anyone think of a different way of finding out?
Thanks, MKB xxx

I know getting foils and the cap is safe because the colour is not actually touching your skin, I work in a college with hairdressers (im in beauty) but on anyone that is pregnant they will only use temporary colours, they wont use permanant because its not really known if it is completly safe.

I have an all over semi permanent and highlights.
My hairdresser was one of the first people to now as I had an appointment the weeks aftre we found out lol.
She knew exactly what could and couldn't be used and I certainly have had no probs. If you ask at the salon they will tell you

I have to agree, I had my hair coloured and permed last time I was pregnant (it was 8 years ago before you laugh about the perm !!!!) and I have coloured my hair with a box colour at home this time, it didn't have ammonia but did have peroxide and it was fine.
If anyone is really that worried, have a wash in wash out or temporary colour. But I dont think it should matter. My family have been in the Hairdressing business for over 50 years! and they have never heard of anyone having problem whilst pregnant. Some people do react though to colours if they aren't even pregnant and even if they have been using the same colourist for years.
Just go to a reputable salon and have a skin test done first.
There are more chemicals in your everyday products, check out the ingredients to your Hairspray, Moisturiser (even 'Simple' is full of them), household cleaning products and air freshners!!!!
I have just switched to a face moisturiser with no chemicals or Parabens it was only £4.99 from Lloyds Pharmacy its called 'Skinfood' and is better than my top of the range one!, I used to use Dermalogica but now Hubby is redundant, thats a no-go!

hey girls - I have to agree Mrs Ikea...my shampoo is full of words I cant even pronounce!
The treatment I am having is a Brazilian Blowdry (it is a semi perm straightening treatment)...it doesnt contain formaldehyde which is the chemical which is linked to birth defects....
But some shampoos and conditioners contain formaldehyde and we wouldnt even know this....unless we researched.
The hairdressers (Lee Safford Salons in London) seemed to think it was all safe. BUT I dont trust people haaha..I like to find out fo rmyself!
I am seeing my MW on monday...she may have a 'Drug book' which might list the chemicals???

I asked my midwife about this a while ago and she said that it does not harm the baby at all but a strand test should be done before dying hair because it can go a different colour because of your hormones

The only problem I had with permament hair colour when I was pregnant was it went pink
I normally go red but after a day or so it went bright pink so my fab hairdresser redid it for me
So - be careful on colours cos they might change with the pigment changes due to hormones

Well it isnt a colour I am having done (it is a 'supposedly' natural semi perm straightening treatment, called a Brazillian Blow Dry).....I say supposedly natural as the only natural ingriedient I can find is cocoa!
Hairdresser seems to think it is ok to use, I have had test on skin and I am not allergic, from what I have researched on hair dyes/treatments...such a small amount is absorbed into the skin it is not harmful to baby. The reason they say do not use perm hair dyes when pg is bcos of the fumes...they are more harmful to baby......but there is such little studies that have been done!

Hi
I am a hairdresser, nail technician and also carry out spray tans. I can tell you that all of them are safe for both you and the baby, however, due to your hormone changes, there is a chance that treatments can come out slightly different to what you are used to. You should have a skin test with hair colours and tanning products as you could have developed an allergy to the chemicals, this should be done 24-48 hours before you have the full treatment and the stylist should not charge you for this. Also, I recommend a strand test with the hair colour so you can see what colour it will come out as it can be different to usual with the release of extra hormones. I also recommend having a patch test with tanning as it can go green.
With nails, the only difference you may notice is that they lift quicker than usual. It happens a lot when ladies are on antibiotics, pregnant, or going through the menopause so it is nothing to worry about. The only exception to this rule is of you decide to go to a non-standard-salon. These salons are run by usually Asian/Chinese people who are not trained and not insured, they will use products that are harmful to everyone, not just pregnant women and will wear masks, but not offer one to yourself. Stay away from these salons as the ingredients in their products is illegal in America and is extremely harmful to everyone, we are currently trying to get it bann in the UK too. It is shipped in from China and is used by these nail salons because it is cheap.
I hope this helps you out and if you have anymore questions, just e-mail me!
I am due on 28th July and own my own nail salon aswell as doing hairdressing. I have continued to have my treatments and my baby is nice and healthy, if anything, he's on the big side!!! Ha ha!!!

Thanks Natalie. I am actually having a Brazillian Blowdry (non-formaldehyde). Have you heard that this treatment is safe?
Thanks, MKB x
p.s. I am more worried about birth defects rather then size of baby. So we wouldnt know how healthy baby is until born. xx

Hi there, as far as i no temp colours are fine, but most hairdressers dont put the colour on your scalp, so foils and caps are usually the wasy forward.I dont no the proper name for the chemicals sorry, but perming stuff and perm blonde colours are the usual suspects that people are advised NOT to have, as they are very strong chemicals and COULD harm the unborn, thats a could as they have no scenitfic proof that it will or willl not. hope thats of any help xx

Hi MKB! I had my hair chemically straightened when I was 26 weeks pregnant. I normally have it done twice a year as my hair is really curly naturally and it was really desperate! My stylist is very experienced and she assured me it was ok to do whilst pregnant. She left a tiny tiny amount at the root so the chemicals weren't actually in contact with my scalp but other than that it was the same as every other time i've had it done.
Maybe i am too trusting but she was very confident that it was safe so I went ahead with it.
I'm not sure if it's something similar to what you're having done or not really? Mine is a permanent relaxing/straightening treatment where you just get re-growth rather than all my hair going curly again.
Hope you manage to get the answers you want.

Ah Sapphire - that is good to know! the treatment i am having will be semi-perm - so my hair will go back curly.....to be honest i think i may be making a big deal about nothing as usual.....but i just wanted to be sure it was all safe! Maybe i shld listen to my salon.....it is Lee Stafford, so he would have alot to loose if he was wrong!! xxxx
