Subject : 1st babies ALWAYS late???

Hubby has a lovely friend who has a 3 year old son, and she was talking to him on Facebook last night. She said we'd be having a Christmas baby, and wasn't that exciting?! Hubby thought she'd just forgotten when Splodge was due, being as we don't expect the rest of the world to be counting down to 23rd November too, and she said, "Oh, all first babies are 2 weeks late, so it'll be December!!!" This has freaked hubby out slightly, as he now thinks there's no point thinking the baby will arrive in November, as it's going to be 2 weeks late!!!

I realise there are always exceptions to the rule (I know a girl whose first baby was super-early but was ok in the end) but is this what I'm supposed to expect as the norm?! I'm inclined to think she just thinks this because she went 2 weeks over with her son, but hubby is convinced she's right (we don't know many people with babies, even this girl lives pretty far away and we hardly see her). Surely the majority of first time babies aren't a full 2 weeks late?

Em 20+1 x x x

No I dont think so, my 1st, a girl, arrived on her due date, my 2nd, a boy, I was induced at 10 days late. Im now 41+1 with a little boy and looking quite likely I'll be induced again. People have said to me ahh you're overdue.... is it your 1st? when I say no 3rd they act surprised! You never can tell!! xx

Hon
I don't think it's true and I have lots of people telling me it will be xmas day and laughing as i'm due 20th December, why they are laughing I don't know. What better present, doesn't bother me about being in hopspital for xmas day - well enough of that rant!
My mum was 3 weeks early with me and I was her first and 2 weeks early with my sister so it's not true.
Like sxychick says, it comes when it's ready so try not to worry.
I'm actually thinking along the lines that my baby will come sometime in December. With my mum being so early with me and my sis it's very possible I will be early too and lets face it, how many of us are going to be booking things 2 weeks before/after our due date!
Tell your husband it's all a load of wives tales!xxxx

Our lo came almost six weeks early but was completely normal and complete. We where discharged out of the hospital on day 2 to the surprise of everyone he was doing very well and was acting like he was term. It was just his time to come out. (mind you, he was 7lbs1 when born, I do not want to know how much he would be at term) We were not expecting it and I was actually thinking I would be late. You just can not know.

Your baby will come when they are ready. My best friends first was a week early, her second was almost a week late. Mother in law, her first two where late (but not two weeks) and the third was early. My mum had her first 2 weeks early and me 2 weeks late (I am born on christmas day, the only day my mum did not want to give birth). Most people I know with babies are actually within two week before and one week after. But you can not say anything about it.

My first was 2 weeks late (due on 7th December, born on 20th)!!!

I'd try not to worry about it though, it's not a hard and fast rule at all and I know plenty of people who's first babies have been on time or early.

Like the other ladies have said, baby will come when he/she's ready.

Thanks everyone, I may just show this thread to my hubby! I'm hoping baby will be on time, or at least reasonably close to due date (wishful thinking, I know) as then it'll be about a month old for xmas and it'll be so lovely!

Emma - if your baby does come on xmas day, it's not a big deal at all, I agree! My cousin's birthday is xmas day, it's fine! Now he's all grown up he has a big night out with his mates around xmas time, and always sees his family for his birthday, because they're all always free, it being xmas!

Thanks Emily, I honestly don't get people's problems. Babies are miracles and I don't care when mine decides to make an appearance or how "inconvenient" other people may consider it - means I don't have to do the horrid family visits this year for xmas LOL!

Totally agree with everyone else - babies are all different and will arrive when they want to Happy

SBJr was 9 days early and TJ was 2 days early. I did go in to be induced with TJ though but was already in labour when I got there (I had no idea LOL! ) so if I'd been left then I reckon he probably would've arrived on his due date.

TJ was born on NYE which I think is a fab time to have a birthday - always gonna be party night on his birthday Happy

my baby was 3 weeks early(would of been 14 weeks if she had her way) but i think babies come when they want. my midwife said in general first babies are usually later than subsequent babies BUT not always i think the average go over is about 5-8 days anyways not the entire 2 weeks.xxx
