Subject : Please help me stop my friend
I have a close friend who is also TTC. I have been TTC for 5 months, and she has been for 8 months - we are cycle buddies and have been for a while.
I have found out that this person wants to start taking clomid which she has bought over the internet without prescription. I'm really worried but she wont listen to me. Is she going to damage herself by taking it? I thought i had read that if you ovulate normally etc then it just wouldnt have an effect, but she says shes only taking 100 mg tabs (i have no idea if this is a lot?) so it will help her release more eggs and get pregant quicker?
I'm really worried but i dont feel i can talk to her properly as I dont know anything about it! I have looked a bit on the internet but couldnt find anything about people who dont need to take it, taking it!
Argh! I know we all want a baby badly but i'm scared she is going to make herself ill!
Anything helpful i could say to her would be great

Hi i am currently taking 100mg of clomid but have had it on prescription from my GP as i hardly ever ovulate due to my PCOS. If she is ovulating fine then i don't know why she wants to take the clomid. It can make you produce more than 1 egg at a time so her chances of having a multiple pregnancy is much higher. Ive never really heard of many people starting off on 100mg its normally 50mg so it is rather worrying. I think you just need to sit down with her and tell her how you feel because your worried about her as a friend. I hope this helps, Han x

Sorry cant really help, i'm on clomid 100mg on prescription.
You just got to try and convince her that what shes doing is dangerous as you need regular monitoring when on clomid.
good luck hun xxx

Hi Romeo
I think you're quite right to be trying to stop your friend. I ovulate regularly but we have unexplained infertility. I was given 50mg of Clomid to take while we had IUI. The clinic scanned me before performing the treatment because of the risk of me producing too many eggs. Since your friend is already ovulating and is now thinking of taking 100mg, she would have a highly increased risk of multiple pregnancy, which can be very dangerous in itself. The medication wouldn't be available on prescription unless it was only to be taken with medical supervision. I think your friend is nuts to take prescription medication that she's not been prescribed, as clearly you do too!Another issue is that she has absolutely no idea what medication she has been sent via the internet - she could be taking anything. Good for you for trying to stop her.

Hi there, I am on my first cycle of clomid and only on 50mg at the moment as my doctor told me that it can cause hyperstimulation of the ovaries. This can be particulatly dangerous and cause further problems, it can be life threatening at worse case so if your friend is ovulating I would strongly recommend she shouldnt take clomid and certainly not without supervison from a doctor. I know aonther lady on here had hyperstiulation and ended up in hospital in a lot of pain.
I do hope you manage to convince her this is a bad idea, if it was bought off the internet she may not even have the drug she is suppsoed to have, there are no gurantees, she could end up making herself exptremely ill and I would personally be worried what it may do to my fertillity, she has no idea what this drug could do to her weather it is clomid or not!
Good luck xx

She has got to be very careful doing that. When my fertiliy specialist put me on it, I'm trying to remember correctly as it was a long time ago, he stated that I can only have 3-4 cycles of it because research had dicovered that it does increase the chance of cancer slightly I can't remember if he told me if was ovarian or cervical.

Thanks so much for your thoughts girls. I know we all feel desperate from time to time but i just think that if she did that hyperstimulation thing by accident then she might damage herself.
Its really tough going this TTC lark!
I think i might print out this post and the one on TTC and show them to her - I dont care if she goes mad if it stops her in her tracks!
I think i need to get her on to baby expert as then she can realise that it doesnt tend to happen for people on month 1 (her sister got preg on month 1 and she thinks that it is normal!)

as awful as it sounds within 18 months is classed as normal although this is a really long time and can be hell for the couple who take that long (as i did) but yes a bit of patience would prob do her no harm LOL Good luck to you romeo x
