Subject : Engorged boobs after losing baby

Dear Ladies,

Babyexpert swallowed my story of my baby. I will rewrite it soon.

I lost my baby on saturday night and now have painful, engorged boobs. The GP told me to take Nurofen as he said this will help. I wondered how long this swelling took to go down for other people and whether your GP/Midwife prescribed anything else?

My poor body is all geared up to feed my son but I have lost him. He was born too early to live. It's also very hard to hug my husband properly with these swollen boobs.

I'd also like to know how soon your periods returned after the loss of your baby. I have a feeling it will take my body months before i'll have periods and ovulate.

Also is there any special vitamins I should take to aid recovery. I'm still taking my pre-natal vitamins and was told I didn't need to take iron tablets as my haemoglobin levels were ok but am wondering if a Multivitamin with Iron or something else would help.

Many thanks

Claire

Hi Claire, so sorry to hear about the loss of your little boy. Hope you have lots of family/friends around you to support you.

Em I remember I asked the midwife at the hospital ' when will my boobs start leaking etc' and she ran off and came back with two small rectangular shaped tablets(sorry, I have no clue what they were called. She said they would stop the milk production so reduce any leaking to a minimal amount. They worked extremely well and actually my boobs never leaked or felt uncomfortable atall. She did say that they might feel lumpy, but I didn't notice this. Maybe you should ask your midwife if she knows/has these tablets.

My first period started around three to four weeks after I stopped bleeding. I bled for about two weeks after the birth so it was around 6 weeks for me . You get told the bleeding will be heavy for your first few periods but just to warn you, I was bleeding so heavily I thought I was going to die, I phoned the doctors three times and had two appointments during my first period. Tmi but everytime I moved/walked/went to the loo it was pouring out of me. I'm led to believe this is normal so if this happens to you, try not to worry.

Sorry if I've baffled on a bit. Big hugs being sent your way, takecare xx

Dear Ceilidh,

Thank you so much for your reply. I have read your Darcey's story and your words have helped me so much in my grief. You sound very wise for such a young woman and I'm sure you will have a wonderful future ahead of you and will be a wonderful mum. I was especially sad when I read that Darcey had died on my birthday.

I'm glad your periods came back so soon as I was thinking it might take ages to get all the hormones out of my system. I'm hoping that by having a healthy diet, gentle exercise and plenty of rest I might help my body heal.

My mum was surprised that the hospital did not give me anything and the doctor's recomendation of Nurofen/Ibruprofen was not ideal as it says it temporarlly impairs fertility. They are working though and I hope I'll only need to take them for a few more days.

I wasn't warned about the heavy periods but am so glad that you mentioned this as I normally have quite light ones. I am going to contact the midwives today as I need more help. My GP was very sympathetic but he just doesn't know much about this. It seems most women that come to the surgery deliver 9 babies each without problems.

Thank you once again.

Dear Claire, I am so sorry for your loss, I read your message on my thread, thank you for your kindness. My milk came in around day 4 after the birth of my daughter and my breasts felt very full and sore for 24 hours or so. My midwife told me that they don't give anything these days to stop the milk production, your body will realise it's not being used and the milk will re-absorb into your system. I am using breast pads in case of leakage & painkillers when required. It does get better. Take care of yourself and I'll look out for your story when you have time to post. George, x

Dear Claire

Was so sorry to read about your darling William. There seems no rhyme or reason for our liitle babes to be taken from us; it seems so unfair.

I know that finding the right words in these circumstances is pretty difficult and that it may be hard to find comfort in my post to you but please know that we are all here for you and we do understand.

I hope your hospital are as supportive as mine has been. I have found the photos they took an immense comfort for me. I have created a memory box for Eve and spend time going through her things, such a private thing but it helps on the dark days.

Am sending you and your family my love and strength.

Tracy

Dear Ladies,

Thank you for your replies. I am so grateful to be able to speak to people who understand.

The good news is the boobs have now gone down and I've stopped the Ibuprofen. I'm just waiting for the bleeding to stop, although it is lighter now, then I'll feel like I'm getting my body back. At least now the sore boobs have gone down I can hug my husband properly as he really needs those hugs.

i was worried that I'd have massive stretchmarks on my boobs but so far they look ok.

i'm glad it's raining today! It suits my mood better than the sun!

Take care,

Claire
