Subject : A word of warning for those who plan to find out sex at 20wk

Hi Ladies

Just thought I'd share this with you all in case you really want to find out the sex at 20 week scan...

When we were at the our major local hospital for our reassurance scan I read a poster that said they do NOT do sexing as part of the 20 week scan and that if you want to find out you can book a private scan there for £50 but only after 23 weeks! Sounds like a money making scheme to me WhateeeEver!

We had already decided to have a private gender scan at 16 weeks with Babybond so it doesn't affect us but just thought I'd share and say it may be best to check with your local hospital first just in case Smile

Aww no that's poop i hope my hospital isnt the same, how disgusting is that all they have to do is say one word boy or girl and they are charging for the prvilage as if they don't make enough money through the car parking fees at my local hospital!!

Thanks for the warning im gonna check with mine.

Hi,
I think it goes a bit deeper than just been a money-making scheme. There have been incidents of couples in certain communities aborting their babies because they found out it was a girl. As a result, certain areas of the country (based on the local demographic) do not tell you the sex at the 20 week scan. Also, the reason they probably wait till after 23 weeks in your hospital is also to decrease the abortion rate based on the the sex of the child.

It's horrible that this happens, I cannot understand some people's mentality.

babybarbarella - that's so awful Sad Makes you kind of glad that they put this in place if it stops something like that happening. Not really fair on those who genuinely just want to know, but what can they do?

Hi thats really bad. My local hospital do tell you at the 20 week scan if they are sure enough. I asked my midwife and then asked again at 12 week scan, lol. we were going to have 16 week scan but we would have to travel from dorset to london for a decent one so thats extra cost ontop and we know we definatly want a 4d scan at 26 weeks!

When I had my scan and we wanted to know the sex she told us many times it is not 100% because in the past couples have been told they were say having a girl, go out and buy everything for a girl and end up having a boy and try to sue because they had spent all this money. All we were told is it looks like a girl but it's not 100%.

gc from Dec, i think this is yet another thing that varies. My hospital do sexing scan at 20 weeks but won't guarantee more than 70%, we're having a 4d/gender scan at 25+5 anyhow

How awful that people wpould abort based on the sex of the child. With my first I really wanted a boy but when we found out Emily was a girl we adjusted to the idea not get rid of her. I am so glad we didn't she is the most gorgeous little girl ever and so well behaved. My son on the other hand is very trying on my nerves. I would like another girl this time but I am not going to be upset if its a boy having had both I see the upsides of both sexes now so I really don't care.

Even though it was really stressful having to have a genetic test the only upside has been I can find out the sex for 100% sure. I am so excited to find out I think the receptionist is getting sick of me rigning to find out if the results are in. I want to start buying stuff though and I wont until I know the sex.
