Subject : bringing up breast milk supply

hi every1. just wanted to ask if ne1 had ne suggestions on increasing breast milk???
i took the advice from msg boards and from my HV but so far i cant see ne improvement, if nething my milk is decreasing.
my baby is 12 weeks old today and about 10 lbs....we've had alot of latching on probs, which was getting easier but now my milk supply is going downhill so im having to give her formula milk, which doesnt do much good about our latchment probs....or milk supply.
a breast feeding support clinic told me to take time out 2-3 times a day and express milk, so breasts get empty regularly and produce more milk, but its not happening...and its been over a week.....i was told ill see a difference in a couple of days...
im really stressing now because i wanted to bf her upto 6 months, minimum, but at this rate im not going to last 4 months,
please help,
ive tried pumping and increasing food and drink supply, latching her on most of the day so her sucking mite stimulate production.....asked for domteridone, but GP refused....
the only difference ive seen is my boobs are sore full and leaking when i get up in the morning....but after her morning feed and expressing i have practically nothing left all day....at lunchtime i have to give her formula, then at teatime im sitting with her til late evening bf, until i finally give in to the bottle at nite b4 bedtime to settle her for the nite, when she sleeps for 6-7 hours, then its bak to the full and sore leaking boobs in the morning again........please help im in a vicious cycle here,
i dont wnt to start expressing in the middle of the nite if shes not taking her feed then, plus i dont get ne rest during the day what with a 3 and 5 year old, so i really need those 6 hours sleep at nite.........but ne other suggestions then please help

I used Fenugreek and Nettle Extract to help with supply (both available from health food shops) The Fenugreek I found useless, but for other people it is great. I swore by Nettle Extract, it really worked well but tasted foul!

I also found the more I worried about it, the more my supply was affected. It's easier said than done but try if you can to relax and not worry too much about it (I'm a born worrier so can't follow my own advice!)

hi

sounds like we're in the same boat.

you can also just buy domperidone over the counter, i was lucky my gp has agreed to give me it although he was a bit doubtful as it's not licensed for this use. but if he hadn't given me it i'd have got it anyway. i think it's working for me, but my milk supplyis still low.
expressing is useless i hardly get anything out. still supplementing with a lot of formula too.
anyway good luck. and corinna thanks for the tips about fenugreek and nettle extract, will try those

hello,
I was having the same problem a week or so ago, full boobs in the morning and nothing by the afternoon and was told to keep expressing, but I have found that if I don't express my full morning boobs then my supply is actually better for the day ahead, however if I do express because they are very full then I will only express from 1 and feed from the other till that ones empty then next feed give the ebm and offer that 'expressed breast' if bottles empty, then next feed I feed from the non expressed breast and offer second breast, then next feed offer second breast.
I also have one formula feed at night at 7pm when I also express that feed from both breasts and feed him that in night (if I don't feed myself)
Also, I feed him before bed and if my breats don't feel quite empty I'll pump until epmty so They are not SO full in the morning.

Sorry its a but much to take in, you will probably have to read a couple of times to understand, lol!

My lo is 8 weeks old and around 13lb.

Good Luck!

Thanks for this post! i am also mixed feeding and have found no matter how many times I express a day (once or 5/6) I always get the same amount total over the day!

Might be having a trip to Holland and Barrett I think!
