Subject : What's my first step?

Hello ladies, well its been just over 2 years and there's no sign of a BNP, we've done everything you are supposed to do (I think), and I have a regular 28 day cycle, but nothing has happened. Hubby now wants us to consider going to see the Doctors. I am 36 and he is 32. So my question is, what is my first step? Do I just ring my doctors practice and ask for a normal doctors appointment or is there usually someone specific you should go to?

Hi chick welcome to lttc, yep that is all you do ring drs and make appoitnment. When you go have details of your cycles, if you know you ov etc (do you use the wee sticks etc) She/he will prob then book you in for a 21 day blood to confirm if you ov and send your OH for SA, it varies from trust to trust on who sends you for these things, either she'll do it herself or send a referral to the hospital for you which is what happened with me.

Good luck x

OK, thanks for that, I'll get onto it today. So should I bring my hubby with me for this appointment or is there any point?

Hi hun, just to echo what MB's said, just get a normal appt to see GP. He will probably send you for blood tests first and maybe hubby and SA, depends on the gp. Good luck and let us know how you get on xxxxx

Thank you ladies. I have an appointment at my Doctors next week so I guess we'll see what happens ... The receptionist was very helpful when I mentioned it was to do with fertility as she seemed to want me to see a specific doctor so hopefully I won't get someone who just says "try some more".

You will be glad you are seeing docs. You are over the 1 year of ttc so they should be helpful ! Good luck. If you have normal cycles I think you are probably ovulating. Have you tried the sperm meets egg plan ?

I've never heard of that what is it ??

Well I had my Dr's appointment today, she was very approachable and agreed its time to look into the why of why its not happening for us. I have 2 blood test appointments to start the ball rolling and my hubby has an appointment to speak to the Dr about his SA. She wants to have all the tests done by 20th July before she goes on holiday on 26th July so she can refer us if needs be before she goes away.

I am so angry at myself .. sigh .... I thought my first blood test was next Monday (I was looking at my work calendar trying to work out how I'd get to a 12pm appointment when I noticed it said 8.30am). So I quickly got my diary out and yes, you guessed it ... wrong Monday. I should have had my first blood test Monday just gone .. today is Wednesday so now on Day 23, not 21 as I should have been !!!!!!!!!!

So I rang the Dr's who said they only do blood tests in the morning so I had to go to Colchester General (I work in the City !!!). So then I spoke to HR and left in a real panic (so much about being discrete, basically all the busy bodies will have figured it out by tomorrow and won't be shy to ask/insist on what's going on).

Dr's couldn't guarantee it would be OK but they said it would be worth doing and the second one on time to see how it goes ...

Had my second blood test today and hubby's SA results are back in later today so at least things are on the move for us. Two ladies at work have both announced they are due and leaving just before Christmas. I am truly honestly very pleased for them both, they are both lovely ladies, but also a part of me is very envious too.

Also, had the in-laws over this weekend and my lovely sister in law mentioned they are trying and asked if we were and I just said "oh well, yes, we'll just see what happens" so I guess there will be family babies soon one way or another but again I'll be pleased for her if it happens for them soon.

So the Dr rang me to say the Day 2 test (which I only did y'day) was fine, but the Day 21 was very low (not surprising as I messed up the dates and it was actually day 24 or 25) and so didn't show ovulation. So I'm doing Day 21 again this month, in the meantime he's going to get on with the referral to the gynae department at our local hospital anyway. Hubby is still waiting on a phone call to explain his SA results.

hi lougla - what's happening for you now?
I was interested to read your progress as I'm just starting with all of this too and don't actually know what to expect at any stage.
I've not had a period since coming off the pill over 6 months ago, bloods came back normal, AC has done nothing and GP's just told me not to take it, and referred me to Gynae 4 Aug.
OH not yet had SA, no mention of it yet, is this something he should go to his GP about, or will my Gynae sort that too?

thanks

Lxx

Hi there,

Unsurprisingly my blood tests came back as not ovulation (which is what I guess will happen if you do your day 21 test on day 25 as I did, doh ...). Anyway I am redoing the day 21 test next week but they also gave me my referrral details for the local infertility/gynae clinic at our local hospital so I have been able to make an appointment for the 30th July to "get the ball rolling" as it were. I think I was lucky to get a cancellation as there was supposed to be a 32/40 day wait.

Hubby's SA was not great apparently which I was very surprised about, he's very healthy, barely drinks, isn't overweight - all the factors that are supposed to go against you. So that's one more thing for us to consider but so far all I've had are blood tests. I'm assuming the first appointment at the clinic will be to just go over things, talk about cycles, etc. and then they'll decide what happens next. The Dr at my surgery did mention a scan at some stage too.

My hubby had his SA paperwork done at our Dr's so he needs to speak to them really - mine mentioned to his Dr that I was being "investigated" and he was given the paperwork and pot that day. I would try and get that done soon so that whenever they do blood tests on you they'll be able to compare both sets of tests straight away. I think I'm quite lucky in that our Dr's surgery jumped into action straight away (scarily so while they kept mentioning my age - I'm 36). Still, I can't complain about them.

Hi Lougla!

I've been on and off BE for a while now - ttc since the start of 2008 - and I am in the same place as you. I am actually looking at the bruises my 21 day bloods have caused as had them on Tuesday. I have very long cycles so the doc does not think I am ovulating and has also referred me for a ultrasound scan of my ovaries as I also have PCOS in my family (both my mum and grannie). I am 30 next year and they moved pretty fast with me too as I only had the first appointment with the doc last week. My husband made the appointment for us (even though I told him to!), and he came with me even though they are not referring him for a SA until they have done my tests. I appreciated the support as I can be quite emotional about the whole thing so it was nice to have him there doing the talking initially, even though the doctor did say he was going to concentrate on me and obviously asked me all the cycle questions.

Good luck and keep us posted. I have mixed feelings about it all as I feel good that something is being done but also concerned that the doctor has obviously identified a potential problem. I have heard lots of good things about Clomid though so if I am not ovulating then I'm assuming that is the logical next step for me. But we shall see....

S xx
