Wow, what a mix!

My only problem with consultancy/self employment is losing my security blanket - the NHS (for its sins) does offer pretty good benefits in terms of pension, sickness, maternity etc, plus a guaranteed income. I'm not sure i could ever give that up!! xx

Nessie / MrsRodders - i can totally understand your reservations and reasons for not giving up the job security - there's no way i would/could have done it without hubby's support either

i've been considering going back to permanent work for the maternity leave but there just arent the jobs at the moment - maybe in 6 months or so.

Also, in the industry i work in there is very little job security. My best friend worked for the same company i did - 2 months ago she was called into the HR office and told she had to leave the next day. They gave her a big enough pay out that it wasn't worth her while taking them to court (and actually it's been a good thing for her) but you just can't count on keeping your job in that industry anymore

PS - the company i'm talking about offers 12 months maternity leave - full pay! so definitely worth trying to go back when we start TTC

That makes sense, its just weighing up the risk i guess and for you there would have been risk either way.

Definitely worth getting back in for the maternity leave - though i know in the nhs you have to have been emplyed for 12 months prior to your 15th week of pregnancy to qualify for the full package. Might be worth checking (if you haven't already!!) xx

Ooooh, so many interesting jobs! My dream job would be a Primary School teacher, but I'm a bit to set in my career at the moment to change things, especially with ttc on the horizon. Perhaps when my future LO goes to school I'll start the studying...

I'm an Office Manager too Bon Bic. For my sins been with the company 12 years and was considering leaving last year, but then the body clock kicked in and that was that! Holding on for the maternity leave and then who knows.

They say that new mummies make good entrepreneurs as they see real gaps in the market whilst juggling their new lives. Perhaps we'll all be the next Alan Sugaress! lol.

I manage a Welsh music promotion centre. It's a very varied job and we have a network of 42 centres worldwide so I get to travel a bit for conferences etc. Was planning to move on to the next job but I have an excellent maternity package there and the job is very flexible so I'm happy where I am at the moment.

Nice to see those of you who work children haven't been put off!!

I work part time since I have become a mum- I work for the financial department of a big communications company...don't think I am allowed to name them...the one Richard Branson owns!

I've got a degree in pyschology and Sociology so once my children are older I'd like to use that. Ideally I would like to train as a midwife, hope to start sometime in the next 5 years.

I currently work for a in human resource consulting for a very large global organisation, and I project manage a variety of pay and benefits surveys. I'm currently looking for a new job though, and I hope to move into an HR position (preferably Reward based).

I don't have a 'career', and have no idea what I want to do. I originally went to college to study computer networking zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, then I fell pg with dd. After she was born I went back to college to do beauty therapy while working part time in a pub. I then rented a shop but couldn't keep up with the overheads as I have no childcare. I now do my beauty from home, bounce at weekends when dd is at her daddys (its oh's company), and I have just got another part time job for when dd starts school in a nursing home. Nothing exciting. I have 3 jobs but no career. I have no idea what I want to to 'when I grow up'. LOL x
