just wondering if anyone has had second or more babies after having a prem? was your second prem, ontime or even late?

i would love to have another in a few years but am really worried about the next being prem as well. there was no reason for my baby to be born nearly 8 weeks early as i had seen the midwife 3 days before i went into labour and my bp and sample were fine. dd's head still had not started to engage at 32 + 2 and she was born at 32 +5

I worry a bit about this too - there was no reason foudn for my early birth either but I try not to think about it too much and I am hoping to be ttc soon.

I was reassured byt the midwife that as there was no reason found (i had swabs and stufff taken to test for infection but all were clear) there was no reason to think that I would have another early labour - the way I see it is if it did happen again we would be more prepared. I will certainly try not to let it spoil another pregnancy but I think that may be easier said than done!

people say that if you have one prem then your more likely to have another so i thought that it might be pretty certain that i would have another. its good to hear that you were told that there is no reason to suspect or expect another.

how early was your lo? how is lo now?

I was also given no reason for early labour and told I would be under a consultant if I was pregnant again as I was classed as high risk. Im not thinking about more kids just now and im probably put off after all the worry and stress when Kenny was born.

My lo was 6 weeks prem and is now 18months old! I too was told I would prob be under consultant care just to be on the safe side but I think that is a good precaution!

I too really worry about this as although I didnt have any tests the Dr's didnt know of any reason for me to give birth 6wks early at 33+6.

Although Ollie did go into SCBU for a week, its not that, that worries me (although could be harder with a toddler) its more loosing the end of my pregnancy as I still dont think im fully over that yet.

Dinks - that is a MAJOR thing for me - sorry to say but still at 18 months on I do think of it - I missed haaving a BIG bump, I missed having lovely maternity nesting instinct etc etc etc I really do feel I missed out on those last 6 weeks! I think it is quite normal to feel that (I hope so anyway!)

My daughter was only just classed as prem as she came at 36weeks. There was no reason for her coming early. I didnt even get to any antenatal classes as apparently according to my mw babies arent born early very often! She didnt go into SCUBU, but she was tubed fed for a week.

I know the feeling about not finishing pregnancy, i was due to finish work the week after she was born. I dont feel I have had any time of to relax since falling pregnant. I'm not wishing for a big bump, Just time to relax, put my feet up and make the most of me and my bump.

My mw said I will be monitored more closely if I fall pregnant again. I have heard there is the possibility of having another prem, but I've also heard that theres really no telling. I have personally put my early labour down to stress. I was a nurse on a ward and it was pretty stressful. I had no support as a newly qualified.

I guess the key is to try and relax and not stress about it as the stress is more likely to effect you. Easier said than done I know. Like Charlie said, at least we will be more prepared 2nd time around. At 36wks, my labour bag was hardly packed!

Well i am glad its not just me that felt like that!

I hadnt finished work and even if I go to term this time I will never get the last few weeks to relax alone, nest, cook, clean etc as I will have Ollie this time (cant complain about that though!)

I was quite big at the end but still wanted to get bigger! And the guilt I felt (and still do) at not being able to 'keep him in' will probably stay with me for a very long time. Probably why I pushed myslef so much to carry on with the BF, but so glad I did that now as we both love it!

I found the whole response to why my lo was born so prematurely very disappointing. None of the doctors or midwifes seemed remotely interested or concerned. When I met the consultant for lo's check-up and asked him about having more children he said that it was "just one of those things" and I would be no more likely than anyone else to have a premature baby next time.

My lo was born at 30 weeks and I hadn't even started my maternity leave... Like a lot of you I feel I really missed out on that getting ready for a baby stage and having time to myself. We are thinking about ttc again next year but as far as I know I will not be given any special care or monitoring just because my lo was premature... I think the approach varies greatly depending on your health authority!

I always wonder about this. I had my lo at 36 weeks so only 4wks prem and luckily she only had to stay in for a few days to be monitored and have antibiotics as my waters went 2 days before she was born.

I was actually feeling huge and uncomfy just before she was born and getting fed up but when i went into labour early i felt guilty for wishing the last few wks of my pregnancy away. I finished work at 33wks so i had a few wks rest before she was born which was nice.

I dont know why she came early and doubt il get any special care next time. I was once told that all women can only carry for a certain time and it doesnt matter that they say a pregnancy is 40wks as if you are only meant to carry for 36 then you will and this will be the same for all pregs. Not sure how true that one is tho.

Dinks - I do think the 'guilt' you talk about does pass - might sound unlikely now but as Max has developed and grown and caught up so that you would never know he was early (apart from still being a bit little) I think that feeling has subsided! But I know what you mean about the bf-ing I am certain that that is why I was so bloody determinedc about it but like you I was sooooooooooooooo glad I had done it cos we both loved it and I was proud of it - anyhow I hope the guilt and worry leaves you soon!

I have my first at 34+4 and I have heard there is a risk to have another one early but I suppose it just depends on your body. Thats the one thing that worries me about having another baby. I don't know what kind of care I would get next time as no one mentioned it. I was also give no reason why my lo was born early. Kara is now 21 months and is thriving and is doing everything she is supposed too and also more than others her age so I don't see any difference in her the fact that she was early.

I am 34 weeks pregnant tomorrow with my second baby. With my first my waters went at 35+5 and I had her 2 days later at 36 weeks. I was given no reason as to why this happened, but I am under consultant care now and they'll be keeping a close eye on me from tomorrow in case I go early again.

TBH the last week or so I have been feeling different and that my body is getting ready for labour again, so will just have to see what happens.

Sam
