Subject : Waters breaking in supermarket?

Okay, this may be a really weird and daft question!

I heard many years ago - when a friend was having her baby - that if your waters broke in the middle of Tesco, that Tesco would give you free nappies for a year. I told this to my OH now that i'm pregnant and he laughed his head off and said it was complete nonsense!

So, is it? Has anyone else heard this? Is it just Tesco or other supermarkets? I don't recall where my pregnant friend got the information from but her husband was all for spending the last week or so of her pregnancy in our local Tesco from morning till night to make sure her waters broke there!

But, also, i guess, how do you prove something like that? Because you might not gush? you might just trickle for hours? So, is it just an urban legend?

Am i the only one who's heard this?!

TIA

Can just imagine the queues in the supermarkets of pregnant ladies nearing their due date all just waiting for their waters to break to get free nappies lol xx

Ive heard this but spontenous rupture of membranes is actually pretty unusual, most ppls waters break in labour or start to trickle. I think to get it they wld have to properly break (when mine went it was like a dam burst there is no way i wld have managed to get out quietly lol) but you wld prob have to go in the paper as they want the advertising

I have heard it about Tesco's and ASDA but don't know if it is true. I won't leave the house at the moment though, it is my worst nightmare to be shopping and my waters breaking. I have actually had nightmares about it. Ha ha!

Certainly not true in ASDA, my oh is a manager for them!! I suspect that it is just an urban myth and that none of the supermarkets actually do it.

Oh rubbish i thought that was true. Its probably happened to some woman somewhere which is how it began but not common practice.

i bet if you made a fuss of it happening and contacted local press then they would all probably give you something. would just depend on how generous the manager is feeling at the time. i doubt it would be a years supply of nappies though. probably more likely to give you some vouchers. i worked in the morrisons cafe for a bit and a lady s waters broke. she was really embarrassed when she came and told us but she was worried as it had happened in the queue and alot of older people were about and she didnt want anyone to slip. our manager phoned her husband for her and gave her free drinks and £20 in vouchers for the store until her husband came, but that was mainly for alerting us to the 'spillage' and to help her overcome her embarrassment more than anything. but i really doubt that anywhere would offer a years supply of anything to do with babies, as it would just be too expensive. but anythings worth a try!

Mine did break in Somerfields, was having a cup of tea in the cafe at the time, and they really did "gush" ! Was a bit confused as I was only 25 weeks, still managed to wipe up with napkins! ( think I was in denial!).

I asked some one to wait with me 'til help arrived, dripping all over the place... she told me not to panic... not very helpful... any way, no free nappies, they seemed rather bemused by the fact I was about to have a baby.

Long story short... baby came very quickly but thankfully in hospital, and all is well with my little girl 2 !/2 years later. Smile
