PCOS question

Hello ladies,

Sorry to gatecrash girls, but I have posted this on the TTC forum, but thought that there may be knowledge over here, hopw you don't mind?

Just a quick question really. We have been trying for our first miracle for 8 months now with no joy.

My sister has just been diagnosed with PCOS (they had a little girl 4 years ago and have been struggling to conceive another) and she believes that it could be genetic. Is this the case? If so, I guess what I am asking is if so, do you think I ought to go to the doctor? I was going to wait to go to the doctor until we had been trying for 12 months, as I am 28 I thought they wouldn't do a great deal before that mark anyway. But given the new family history, do you think it would be worth going earlier?

xx

PCOS question

hi

i have pcos and as i didn't fully understand it myself i got a book about it from the library on saturday and yes it can run in the family.

i was amazed at what i found out.

some of the symptoms include the following:

weight gain
excess hair
depression
fatigue
alopecia
lack of periods or irregular periods
bloatedness
stomach pain.

after reading these symptoms i'm surprised i wasn't diagnosed sooner than i have been. i'd go to your doc and tell them of your sisters problems and they should refer you for the appropriate tests. theres no harm in trying.

.

PCOS question

Hi Tasha and thanks for your reply.

Erm... as for symptoms, I'm not really sure...

- hair growth, well I have always been quite hairy, but then I am dark haired and I've not particularly noticed any more, but then, I guess it could be that if I have PCOS then I've always had it and therefore always been hairy?!
- Weight gain, not particularly, but I am a complete yo-yoer diet wise, but when I do set my mind to it, I do lose it!
- Period pains, yes I do get them, but I wouldn't say severe, or maybe again, I am just used to them?!
- Cycle length, well I have been off the pill now for 10/11 months and they have been pretty regular, anywhere bewteen 27-33.
- Definately not alopecia
- Stomach pains/bloatedness, not particularly, but all sorts rumble down there and perhaps it could be?!

I guess what I am saying is I really don't know! Can I ask what sort of tests they would carry out?

Thanks again Tasha

xx

PCOS question

they tested my bloods on day 3 of of af and day 21.
they also done lots of other blood tests in between
they give me an ultra sound scan and done something were they put the dye through your tubes to see if there blocked. (can't remember the name of it)

i think it was the blood tests and scan that confirmed i had it. they could see the ovaries on the scan but they can tell from your blood if you've got elevated levels of testosterone, lutenizing hormone and insulin.

you don't sound like you have from what you say about your periods etc but you could ask them to test you so at least you can rule it out. epecially ifs its in the family.
