Hi all

Just having a read through of other posts and saw someone (Lizzie77 if you read this!) mentioned that shaking bottles to dissolve the powder increases the air bubbles in the bottle. God of course it does! I am so stupid!!! Please tell me this isn't the reason Toby is so windy?!?!? I will feel awful if it is!!! We really shake his bottles quite vigourously for 10-secs ish to ensure the powder is dissolved, are we adding more air to it?!?!?! We don't use a bottle lid either so don't take off the lid to add the teat.

p.s. we shake the bottles loads as saw a baby being given a bottle one day where the mum hardly mixed the water and powder and we could see lumps in the little girls bottles - look horrid poor lass!!!

Not really thought about this but if you don't shake bottle vigorously, how do you mix the powder?? Amelia is windy to but was when I bf too. I think its more important to have formula mixed properly than lumpy like the girl you saw.

I have always shook mine but with the lid on and all 3 of mine never really suffered from wind or colic maybe i was just lucky but like you never thought of it like that with the air bubbles xx

Hmmm.... don't know if that would affect his windiness or not, I suppose you could leave it for 10 mins or so before giving it to him to see if it makes a difference. But then of course he's really hungry and yelling for his dinner....

It is highly unlikely to cause wind, the bubbles settle by themselves if you leave it to stand anyway. If you dont want to shake it though, just heat up the water first then stir in the powder with a spoon. Any left over air bubbles tend to stick to the bottle or dissolve on their own so i really wouldnt worry about it.

...i've heard this too!! don't know whether its true but just in case (as we have colic issues at the moment!!)..we swirl the bottle then tip it gently upside down xx

I've heard a few people saying this too but have tried swirling it around and the milk doesn't mix properly. If you just mix it then leave it for a minute the bubbles go anyway.

I always shook bottles vigorously (how can they be mixed otherwise??) & lo was never windy so that blows that theory out the window, lol!! xx

i have away given the bottle a good shake as i found if i didt the teat would get cloged

I always gave the bottle a good shake (how else would you mix it ?) and to be fair he was quite windy.
But I don't think the 2 are related. Like some mums have siad they did the same and their lo's had no issues with wind.

Ummmm i never thought about this but i can see how it would add to the wind problems!!

ive also heard this- think it was from some info from Dr Browns. they recommend stirring the milk instead of shaking as it increases air bubbes. xxx

this gave my son wind. in the end i measured the water into the bottle and the poured into a jug and added the formula and wisked until no lump then slowly poured back into bottle, i also changed the bottles at same time and he was great after this. but yes shaking bottles gives bubbles which gives extra wind, may not be the reason for all his wind mind.

It can add to wind problems! My middle boy had colic and reflux and rather than shaking the bottles I made them up warm and stirred. It helped alot! xx

Joo, Chloe123 mentioned this ages ago but at that point I don't think you were bottle feeding Toby. She said she would swill it instead of shake and it seemed to help her older ones - I now do it and Nate isn't windy but having said that he is now 12 weeks old so has pretty much grown out of hte colic stage now. Don't beat yourself up about it he was almost certainly collicky anyway!!

i bought a special stirrer that i used that was safe to put in the steriliser everytime and My little boy didnt have any wind problems. Just added the powder to the water and stirred it till it dissolved

My girls have wind problems so I make up their feeds about 15 mins in advance whenever I can and let them stand for the bubbles to settle. For demand feeds/top ups I have to rely on the gripe water to do its job
