Ditching the dummy?

Not sure if I belong here yet as Lucas STILL isn't walking at 15 months (although I don't think it will be long).

Anyway....

Need tips to get Lucas off the dummy. He currently only uses it in his cot, car seat or if we are out over a nap time and he's in a buggy. We don't let him have one at play times but inevitably he will find one from somewhere! Usually I turn round for 2 secs and he has one in his mouth! lol! I'm not in a desprite hurry but I am off work for 7 weeks (teaching is fab) and would love to send him back to grannies without a dummy...

What's the best way to do it? Cold turkey or reducing use? I'm totally clueless...got rid of bottle and bf no probs but this one has me stumped.

Ditching the dummy?

Slightly out of season - but my brother told my niece early last November that there was a panic in the North Pole as they had ran out of doodies (dummies) and that Santa was having a big 'doodies for dollies' drive. Santa desperately needed her help. Would she be able to give all her doodies to Santa? He would collect them on Christmas Eve. This went on up to Christmas and on Christmas Eve my brother and my niece went around and collected every doodie in the house and put them on a table by the fireplace. The next morning all the doodies were gone and a lovely doll was in their place. She hasn't asked for a doodie since :)

Gabe's 14 months on the 9th July (not walking either!) and he has a dummy too, we don't restrict its use but he normally ends up having it in cot, buggy, car or when he's upset, similar to your lo. He used to have it most of the day but he has reduced it himself over past few months.

We too got rid of bottles last week and never had a problem but with dummies they are more of a comfort thing (he has a muslin as a comfort blanket as well) and also a lifesaver sometimes when Lo's tired, so I will prob be waiting till 2 or so, when he is old enough to explain to.

Though he has self-weaned off the bottle and most of his dummy use, so he may have other ideas!

I would definitely advise cold turkey!

Thanks everyone! If he hasn't ditched it by christmas that will def be my plan! He will hopefully be old enough to understand it by then. I don't know about you but the dummy is starting to look out of place as if hes too old for it and i am getting more self conscious about it when im out. Today he looked so grown up with this shorts, tshirt and cap on then this dummy sticking out! didnt quite look right somehow.

oh well, hopefully it wont be long!! will probably still be finding dummies for years to come ive bought so many (and subsequently lost most of them).

I'm planning on getting rid of Charlotte's at Xmas as she'll be nearly 2 then. I think cold turkey it the way to go for me. I'm dreading it though at bed-time!

this sounds like Shea, only given it at certain times, but always manages to pull one from somewhere!!

He has just recently started (21months) to give it to us saying "yuck" which is good but I was planning on doing the santa trick too and he'll be 2years 3months then.

Everyone says cold turkey is the best way!

Not going to tackle this one quite yet as lo loves her dummy at night, she is showing signs of not wanting it unless tired / grumpy etc so maybe she will self wean like she did with bf, hope so anyway.

Ah no i sound really mean now!

Harry's allowed him yummies at bedtime and occasionally at naptime if he's wound himself up a treat.

There is a 'no dummy outside harry's room' rule and if i find one out it gets binned (he did have a lot of them at one point!).

He does whinge a bit at nap time but he'll go to sleep within about 5 mins ish so i don't think it bothers him overly.

Good luck though - the santa story sounds fab seeing as she'll understand way more by then!
I'm far too mean to wait that long!!
