Hyperemesis gravidarum in 1st pregnancy

Hi Ladies, I've also posted this in toddler forum.

Was just wondering if anyone has suffered this in any of their pregnancies. I did and it was completely awful. It has really put me off having another baby as I'm not sure if I could cope a second time round and with another child to care for as well.

But I really don't want my dd to be an only child and I've always wanted two. Would love to know what anyone else has experienced with HG and just talk to someone about it really. I don't think people realise how nasty it is. I don't know anyone else who's had this condition.

The sickness began at 6 weeks pregnant. I was signed off work at 7 weeks pregnant and did not return until after my maternity leave. I was sick all the time and if not being sick I felt sick. It was a nausea I have never experienced before as it totally took over my body and left me unable to speak without gagging. The only way i could cope with it was to lie down in a dark, silent room. Any smells, noise or food made me sick. All movement made me sick even walking up or down stairs. The car was a complete no no. I spent 8 weeks lying on the bathroom floor. I became so weak i needed help to have a bath or shower. I also had hypersalivation (sp) which meant i was unable to swallow my own saliva as i was producing so much. I would quite often faint or black out. I became absolutely terrified of doing anything alone and relied heavily on my parents throughout my pregnancy. My oh was fantastic too. I began having panic attacks if I had to go anywhere as I was frightened of being sick.

My dd is nearly 2 and I feel like I am getting my confidence back but it has taken so long. My panic attacks are not as bad now and I feel a lot more in control of day to day life but anything different scares me still. for instance long journeys.

I would love to give my dd a baby brother or sister but not sure if I can do the above again. would love to hear your experiencies.

Karlie

Hyperemesis gravidarum in 1st pregnancy

Hello! well let me tell u i know exactly how u feel. i had exactly the same in my first pregnancy, my son is now nearly 2 and a half. i remember saying at the time that i will nver have another baby as it drove me round the twist. i ended up losing so much weight and could barely eat even when i wasnt being sick. i really sympathise but........
I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and although ive felt very sick i have not been sick once!!! i cant believe it. so it just goes to show every pregnancy is different and maybe next time u will be ok. the last thing i wanted was to be in hospital again like last time and i am very lucky to not have been unfortunate this time.
my advice to u would be to try again and forget about last time. and if u do get sick go straight to ur gp and get them to prescribe u anti sickness drugs immediatly as i feel if caught early u may get it under control before it escalates into hyperemesis.
all the best for the future and ill keep my fingers crossed u r ok next time!!

Hyperemesis gravidarum in 1st pregnancy

Hi,

I'm also an hg sufferer. Have two gorgeous boys now, the eldest is 3 in september and the youngest is 7 and a half months.

I had it bad both times but second time round I was more prepared and spent less time in hospital as a result. I approached my GP before trying for baby 2 and told them my concerns. I was given daily injections at home by my husband I asked for this as it was the thing that worked best for me. I don't know about you but swallowing tablets was almost impossible.

It was hard having ds running around I accepted as much help as possible and accepted that the house would have to be a bit of a tip! I was signed off for my entire pregnancy. I did have occasional periods during the pregnancy when I was able to take my son to the toddler group etc. I think the reason for this was that I didn't try to come off the medication. First time I kept on trying to stop the meds as I was worried they'd harm baby, second time round I knew I needed them for everyones sake! My son watched more TV than I would like but he has forgotten all about mummy being sick now he has a playmate! At times he did mimick me being sick and brind me a bowl!

It was really tough but I'm glad I did it they make each other laugh and its so cute!

I would actually almost contemplate doing it again although I would wait a while longer to let my body recover. My husband isn't so keen on letting me go through hg again though! We'll see whta happens for now I'm very happy with my two!

I'd be more than happy to chat! Have you joined the email group blooming awful. There are some great people there who can lend advice and understand what you've been through! Its bloomingawful@yahoogroups.com.

Hyperemesis gravidarum in 1st pregnancy

Hi, i too know how you feel!! I had hyperemis in my 1st pregnancy was sick for 13 wks solid! I am pregnant again just now (18 wks) and have been much the same... although this time I asked for help earlier as I knew a bit better what happens.... Although in both pregnancies I had to spend a few days in hospital on a drip!
This will def be my last pregnancy though - couldn't do it again as with being so ill with Aaron (he was 2 yesterday!) has been tough to say the least so I can't imagine having 2 children and being this ill....
Good luck with whatever you do - I just keep telling myself its worth it in the end Smile Also remember to ask your GP for help as soon as you start to experience any signs of HG.
xx

Hyperemesis gravidarum in 1st pregnancy

Hello! Another HG sufferer here too. I had it from week 4- 40 solid with DD. It was constant, everyday nausea and vomitting. Awful. But i seemed to forget too quickly about all that!
My daughter is 20 months and I am 15 weeks pregnant with my second. The sickness has been bad again im afraid, but once youre pregnant you just get on with it. So i decided not to think about it too much before concieving as I knew i would put myself off! I remind myself many times a day that as soon as baby is here i will feel myself again.
All this said im not sure if it either isnt quite as bad this time, or if I am just coping better (because i have to). But its not quite as debilitating. I certainly feel better this week than i have done for the last 14 alhtough i am still vomitting. I think when the tiredness eases about 14 weeks it helps.
I have said to hubby this month that i dont think i can do this again which is a shame as i always saw myself having atleast 3, but i also know as soon as my beautiful baby is here i will want another!
Good luck with whatever you decide. Go to the gp early.
Im taking cyclizine and metformin orally (when they stay down) Im interested to know what others are taking.
Thanks, Sarah x
