Shoulder Dystocia / Erbs Palsey also in baby

Hi girls,

I dont usally post on here, I have not had access to a computer regulary until now. I am a regular reader so fortunalty everything I have ever wanted to know about my pregnancy and so far baby has always been answered by you in your posts, for which I am very grateful having put my mind at ease on more then one occassions.
I wanted to post my birth story but it is proving very difficult/ emotional to write, so the bare bones of it are. It was quite a traumatic birth, which ended with a kiwi ventouse delivery and an extended episiotomy from front to back. My son had to be resucitated, it took 10 minutes for him to take his first breath. He was taken to scbu. He weighed in at 11lbs 9 half oz, during the birth his shoulder got stuck ( shoulder dystocia) which has resulted in Erbs Palsey of his left arm (paralasis of the arm due to nerve damage) Becasue of this he has never had use of the arm, we wont know the extent of the damage untill he is between 6 months / 1 year. (he is six weeks old) It could be a spontaneous recovery, he could one day regain the movement, no one ones. He has appointments to go back to the hospital but the first one is not for 2 months. i have tried to rearrange but they were not very helpful. my HV said I have to wait, saying its common... I had never heard of this before.

My main concern is that in the mean time his muscle is wasting away and his arm is becoming stiff and heavy, I keep it moving but I am concered that I could be making it worse.

Has any one had any expierence of Shoulder dystocia or Erbs Palsey?

Thanks for your help

x

Hi Dorrart
Thank you for your reply. I will continue to pester the hospital my gp and the health visitor. The hospital said it would right itself withen the week after he was born. It's heart breaking to see him so fraustrated and not being able to help him. He is a happy boy otherwiseand it could of been worse so I am grateful. I know we will come through it.
Thank your for your kind words and prays x x

Hi Pinkhoney

Sorry you had an awful time - certianly not the magical birth we all expect in pregnancy! You've done amazingly.

Re Erbs Palsy. It is very common and the majority of babies have full use returned by one year or so.
Are you having physio? What's suprised me is that you mentioned that his arm is stiffening up, you should contact HV/Hospital or even GP to organise physio sessions and teach you physio exerices to do with him.

Good luck with it and loves of love to you and LO

My son has erbs palsy and has been having intense physio and seeing a chiropractor since he was 6 weeks old. he is now 17 weeks and moves the arm as much as the other..

His was caused through birth trauma resulting in tortcolis and bracial plexus injury
