  • Alison Alexander with daughters Rose (9) and Grace (13) stayed at the Kilkenny River Court Hotel, Kilkenny, Ireland

‘The ferry takes about three hours from Fishguard to Rosslare, but there's lots to do on board. Kilkenny is a medieval riverside town, with a castle and lots of shops and restaurants. The hotel combines grandeur with a family-friendly feel. Staff eagerly accommodate babies, providing highchairs, special menus and cots. There's a spa and swimming pool, so parents can indulge too. We also explored the beaches, countryside and towns.'

Best thing: ‘Great scenery and wonderful food and drink.'

    Worst thing: ‘Lots of driving.'

    Rating ****

How much? Kilkenny River Court Hotel costs from £169 per adult per night mid-season (June), which includes a return ferry crossing for one car.
