  • Moses basket
    * A Moses basket is a small first bed made from either maize, wicker or palm leaf
    * Handles enable you to carry your baby around with you
    * Position it either on a stand (sold separately) or on top of a chest of drawers
    * Can be used until your baby can sit up, usually 6 months
    * Check that it has a hood and well-padded, removable and washable lining
    * Always buy a new mattress if you borrow a Moses basket
    * Make sure you position it out of the way of your pets

    Cribs and cradles
    * Slightly larger, more durable first bed usually made from wood
    * Can be positioned in your room for night-time feeds
    * Suits larger babies, but can only be used until your child can sit up
    * Often comes with soothing rocking or gliding feature
    * Slatted sides make it easier to see your baby sleeping

    Cots
    * All-round slats give you a good view of your baby sleeping
    * A drop side will make putting your baby in easier, especially if you're not very tall
    * Teething rails will protect the cot and your baby's gums or teeth
    * An adjustable mattress base is helpful and safer for when your baby is able to stand

    Cot beds

    * Slightly larger than most standard cots
    * Converts to a junior bed by removing sides and adding an end panel
    * Doesn't usually come with drop-side mechanism
    * Good for when the time comes for your child to make the transition
    from cot to bed
    * More expensive, but you can use it for longer, so it's a good investment

Moses baskets - important

I just want to add one thing to the Moses Basket advice, please, please, please do not use the basket to carry your baby in. It is not secure enough. I speak from experience, my little one fell out of his when I was carrying him from the house to the garden. he fell onto concrete and fractured his skull and had a small bleed on his brain, It happened when he was 3wks old and he is now a very healthy 5 month old. I was very lucky that he has no permanant damage and the bleed has now completely disappeared. Please dont let this happen to you.
