  • It's the online auction site that everyone talks  about for bargains. But just how good is it for kitting out a baby? Student Jessica Bicknell, mum to Holly, 4 months, took up the challenge. Most of what she bought was good quality second-hand, some was brand new, but amazingly Jessica managed to get 10 key baby items for under £100. Follow her tips to bag a bargain for your baby.

    Jessica's bargain haul:

Graco Change Bag + Cosytoes set

    Price new: £29.99 each

Price paid on eBay: £25 for both

Good buy? Discontinued fabric and design but both were brand new, still packaged and complete with tags on.

Good buy? Discontinued design and second-hand but easily washable and well looked after.

    What not to buy

X         Car seats could have been damaged in an accident; these should always be bought new and fitted professionally.

X         Mattresses can never be cleaned completely thoroughly and may be worn and saggy. A new baby should always have his or her own new mattress

X         Feeding and weaning bottles, cups, plates and spoons - worn surfaces can harbour germs.

X         Bedding - only 100% cotton can be washed clean at a very hot temperature.

How to bag a baby bargain

What Jessica discovered while shopping online

    • Log in and open your own account at www.eBay.com
    • The best bargains are on auctions that end in the middle of the night (perhaps you can log on during that 2am feed!)
    • Do research to find out what other people are paying for similar items
    • Double check how much p+p will be, or whether you have to collect the item
    • Decide on a top price and stick to it. If you're tempted to go over, by the time you add p+p you could end up paying more than the shop price
    • Use a service like www.auctionstealer.co.uk to sneak in a surprise bid in the final seconds
    • Avoid potential problems by checking your buyer or seller's history with the eBay feedback ratings
    • Always ask the seller to get a postage receipt - you can claim some money back from the Post Office if the item doesn't arrive
    • If you do have a complaint be polite and try to resolve any problems with the seller. Only leave a negative feedback rating as a last resort
    • Keep your details safe - don't pass your eBay login, password, or your credit card details on to anyone else
    • Use a dedicated secure payment site like www.paypal.co.uk which will give you some payment protection
