  • What you need to know before you buy

    * A buggy is a lightweight, collapsible pushchair. Some are suitable from birth but as they often lack back support, it may be better to wait until your baby can sit up at around 6 months.

    * Ideally, your buggy should include optional fixed/swivel wheels, a hood, raincover, seat recline, storage, sturdy brakes and easy-fold mechanism.

    * Don't assume that because your buggy's light it will also be compact. It may not fit in the boot of your car. Check before you buy.

    * Think carefully about how much you're likely to use your buggy. Is it just for a holiday or occasional use, or are you likely to use it most days? If you plan to use it often, remember that in terms of durability and quality you get what you pay for.

    * Very basic strollers generally offer little comfort or weather protection. Weigh up the pros and cons - a cheaper model may mean no hood, seat recline, swivel wheels or storage. Spending more will give you practical features and durability.

    * You and your partner should each try to push the buggy to ensure you both find it comfortable. If you're different heights, look for one with height-adjustable handles.
