What is rectus diastasis?
  • What is rectus diastasis?

  • Abdominal separation of your muscles is a common pregnancy condition.

Also known as abdominal separation and diastasis recti, this condition is a separation between the left and right side of the muscles which cover the front surface of your abdomen.

You are more susceptible to rectus diastasis during pregnancy, which is why you should avoid strenuous abdominal exercises while pregnant.

But do not worry! It is not an uncommon condition, and it need not cause long-term damage to your midriff.

Rectus diastasis looks like a ridge running down the middle of your tummy, from the base of your breastbone to your tummy button.

Women expecting twins or more, and those on subsequent pregnancies, are more likely to suffer because the abdominal muscles are under greater strain .

Your doctor or midwife should be able to diagnose rectus diastasis. No treatment is necessary while you are still pregnant, but following the birth of your baby, specific exercises can help bring the muscles back together.

Consult a physiotherapist or specialist post-partum exercise consultant to find out how you can treat this condition safely.

In extreme cases, surgery may be required to rejoin the muscles. This is called a tummy tuck.
