The Bio-Oil guide to preventing stretch marks

What are stretch marks and what causes them?

Stretch marks, the lines that may develop on the abdomen, as well as on other areas of the body, are a common skin concern in pregnancy.

They are caused by exactly what their name suggests - stretching.

The skin’s connective tissue is continually adapting to changes in body size. However, during periods of rapid change, such as pregnancy, the skin sometimes has insufficient time to adjust.

In these instances the body expands faster than the skin covering it, causing internal tears in the skin, which heal and cause scars to form.

These scars are known as stretch marks.

Do all pregnant women get them?

Up to 90% of women are prone to stretch marks, particularly in the second and third trimesters.

The likelihood of developing them varies according to skin type, heredity, diet and hydration of the skin.

How does Bio-Oil help?

Bio-Oil contains the breakthrough ingredients PurCellin Oil, as well as the critical ingredients Vitamin A and E; Calendula, Lavender, Rosemary and Chamomile oils.

These ingredients work to maximise the skin’s elasticity, as the body expands during pregnancy, thereby reducing the possibility of stretch marks forming.

Bio-Oil should be applied from the first trimester and for the duration of the pregnancy.

Bio-Oil is safe to use during pregnancy

With regards to the level of Vitamin A in Bio-Oil, it is low enough to render it harmless to the unborn child.

Most healthcare professionals agree that for safety, the daily ingested intake of Vitamin A by an expectant mother should not exceed 5,000 I.U per gram.

Taking topical absorption factors into account, an expectant mother would have to use more than 110ml of Bio-Oil per day - or almost two 60ml bottles - before exceeding the recommended daily maximum intake!

Bio-Oil is therefore very safe for use during pregnancy.

Is it safe to use Bio-Oil while breastfeeding?

It is completely safe to use Bio-Oil on the body while breastfeeding, but it is not recommended for use on the nipples.

Although Bio-Oil is non-toxic, young babies are very sensitive and should not ingest even the smallest amount of Bio-Oil.

Can I use Bio-Oil on my baby?

Bio-Oil should not be used on babies until they are over two years of age.

Even though the fragrance level in Bio-Oil is very low (0.2%) and the essential oils contained in the product are of a very low concentration, young babies are very sensitive.
