The best time to get pregnant
  • The best time to get pregnant

  • If you're trying for a baby, it really helps to know when you're ovulating.

If you want to get pregnant, you need to have sex when you're ovulating. Here are four ways to work out when ovulation occurs:

1. Get your diary out. Ovulation normally takes place 14 days before your next period.

2. Check your vaginal secretion. If it's thicker than usual with the appearance of raw egg white, you're at your most fertile.

3. Take your temperature. Do this every day before you get up. When you ovulate, it rises by around half to a full degree centigrade.

4. Buy a kit. Clearblue Ovulation Test (£19.99 for seven sticks from Boots) detects a hormone, which rises 24 to 36 hours before ovulation.

5. Use the BX ovulation calculator. It can help you pinpoint your most fertile days, tell you when your baby would be due, and work back to when you should have sex to give birth on a certain date.
