Third baby in three years

  • Vicky was induced for her first two babies so wasn't sure she'd spot the signs of labour third time round.

Third baby in three years

Vicky O'Brien tells her birth story: 'I was expecting my 3rd baby within 3 years, so although I'd given birth, I was induced with both previous pregnancies and was worried I wouldn't know when the labour had begun.

I was due 3/8/07 but at 05.30am on 29/07/2007 I got up early and was happily reading a book when I had my 1st contraction. I sat on my birth ball and the next contraction hit me thick and fast.

After the 3rd contraction they were spaced 3 mins apart and lasting well over a minute. I was really worried it was a false alarm but my hubby Rich got up and made me phone the hospital who said I sounded ready to go in!!!

As we had the other 2 children in bed, I needed to call my friend Sara to come and watch them.

I was planning to wait till 7am to call her as she was 8 months pregnant at the time. Luckily Rich insisted I call her and my parent to drive down for Luton in case we were in for a long labour.

As soon as Sara arrived, we set off for the hospital.

The contractions were now on top of each other but I was coping fine with my breathing, and listening to a bit of George Michael in the car helped me relax (Rich always turns it off, but not this time).

We arrived at the hospital at 7am in the middle of handover so we were shown a room and told someone would be with us soon, but she was sure nothing was imminent as I was too calm and together.

I plugged in my Ipod whilst bouncing on a birth ball like a maniac . Meanwhile Rich disappeared in search of a toilet. 20 minutes later I was thinking, I will need lots of painkillers if this carries on.

Rich walked back in to me pacing the room then trying to put my slippers on. He asked what I was doing and if my waters had broken

'I don't know what I'm bloody doing, I just want my slippers on,' was my curt reply. Then my waters broke all over my nice new slippers! Rich was very concerned with clearing up the mess (he is a clean freak!) so I shouted to get a midwife.

I climbed on the bed as the midwife walked in, and she told me she was going to have a look and see where we were in the proceedings.

With that, I had a really strong contraction and out popped the head.

Rich went very white as he really didn't want to be at the business end.

With another push, Chloe was born at 07:48am and we were in shock.#

The midwife then introduced herself and asked our names as we really hadn't had time for introductions.

It was then another 1.5 hrs till Chloe was weighed, and we were shocked as she weighed in at 9lb 13oz and 2 foot long.

I would highly recommend a 2 1/4 hour labour, although I was gutted I didn't get any gas and air. It would be the nearest I'd be to feeling drunk for quite some time!'

Vicky is mum to Poppy (25/08/04, 9lb 12oz) Sam (20/04/2006, 7lb 6oz) and Chloe (29/07/07, 9lb 13oz).
