My baby was a footling breech
  • My baby was a footling breech

  • Christine opted for a planned C-section when told her son was a footling breech - and a big 'un.

Christine Dean tells her birth story: 'I had quite a difficult pregnancy and found out at 28 weeks that my son was breech.

At this stage they play a wait and see game to see if the baby will turn on their own. By 34 weeks he had not moved and due to his size there was no chance that he would, however by this time he had become footling breech: his right foot was at the bottom underneath him and his left up by his ear.

Due to his large size, I was booked in for a planned Caesarean at 39 weeks. I was warned that due to having a large baby and polyhydramnios (lots of amniotic fluid) it was likely I would go into premature labour.

Well, on the night of the 25th Feb I was just dropping off to sleep in bed when I felt a lovely warm sensation. I just jumped out of bed and tried to find something to 'catch' it in and found a cup. Realising it just wouldn't work, I ran to my bathroom and just stood there.

I had to laugh at myself as I was standing leaking water everywhere when I was in a bathroom.

It took half an hour for my waters to stop running, I just could not believe how much there was.

My oh had been out for a drink earlier so could not drive and I frantically phoned round until I found someone who could take us.

When we finally arrived I got trapped between the automatic doors as they are locked at night.

The surgeon came straight down to examine me due to my lo being footling breech and found that his own foot had brocken my waters.

We were taken straight into theatre and I had a spinal block (the worst bit being the cold spray they use to test your feeling).

The sensation of the spinal block was the most bizarre as i could feel the sheet on top of me but not anyone touching me.

They had a bit of trouble actually delivering my son and he actually tore the incision due to his size.

For the next half an hour I sat and stared at my son in my partner's arms as I could not hold him while they were closing me up.

Everyone there was brilliant - they talked us through every step of the way and helped me breastfeed my son for the first time.

Samuel was born on February 26, 2008, weighing a happy healthy 10lbs 14ozs.'
