Labour positions to try
  • Labour positions to try

  • Giving birth? Don't take it lying down! (That's what the experts say.)

If your due date is approaching, you have probably started thinking about how you would like to deliver your baby.

Here are three birth positions you might want to consider:

  1. Standing: in the first stages of labour, try to stay upright. Your baby's head will push down on the neck of your womb, helpingto open it up.
  2. Squatting: this is a good position once you've begun to push. Your birth partner can massage your back, or crouch down in front of you so you can rest your arms on their knees.
  3. On all fours: when your baby is being delivered, you may find this the most comfortable position. It's also proven to reduce the risk of tearing and helps relieve back pain. Take extra pillows with you to hospital so you can put them under your elbows and knees for support.
