5 days in hospital after the birth
  • 5 days in hospital after the birth

  • The birth was straightforward, but Sarah was kept in for 5 days afterwards to make sure she was OK.

Sarah Harrison, 19, tells her birth story: I was 6 days over my due date when I started having back pain at half 4 in the morning. I'd had back pain quite often in the last 2 weeks but it felt different.

So at 8am my mum drove me and my boyfriend to the hospital. After an hour we got sent home and I was told to wait to see if it gets worse and to have a bath.

At midday I rang the hospital and explained the pain was worse so I got called in to be checked out. I was in the early stages of labour.

I was given a drip as I was down for group B strep. I had a monitor around my bump but they couldn't detect a heartbeat due to the baby changing position, and when they did get one he was asleep.

My contractions started getting more and more regular and I was sent to have a bath. I was given gas and air as pain relief but all I did was sleep the entire time.

When I was 6cm my boyfriend, Joe, went to meet his mum and have some food. Half an hour later, midwives ran to find him because I wanted to push. My mum was shocked when my midwife, Anna, told her I was 10cm dilated.

After 2 and a half hours continuous pushing I was sent to theatre to have a forceps delivery. Seeing Joe in a surgery gown was the funniest thing I had seen all day.

After one big push I was handed a little bundle of blankets and Joe told me we'd had a boy. He was then taken to my mum in the delivery room to be weighed and measured and I followed about 10 minutes later.

When I got there, my mum gave me a kiss and Dylan was in a cot. My family and Joe's family were there and gave me gifts.

When they all left I was taken down to the ward and stayed there for 5 days, due to the great loss of blood making me weak and then my blood pressure was low and temperature was high.

On the second day I was able to breast feed Dylan. On the third day I was allowed to leave the bed, as the many drips and blood transfusions and a catheter had prevented me from doing so.

Going home was the best thing because even though the staff were wonderful I just wanted to be home.

Now Dylan is 2 months old and loves playing and has been trying to crawl from day 1.

The birth wasn't what I'd planned but I definitely don't regret it and I would definitely go through it all again as I've gained a wonderful little boy.'
