  • Avocado, blueberries, bananas: here's why they should be on your child's plate.

First superfood

Did you know Spanish sailors used avocado as a substitute for butter on long voyages? But perhaps the best fact of all about this deliciously creamy fruit is that it's full of nutrients. Dietitian Anne Suckling says: ‘Avocados are an excellent source of healthy fats, plus vitamin E, which is good for the immune system, vitamin A for healthy eyes, and vitamin D to help keep their bones strong.' It's quick and easy to prepare and can be offered as a first food on its own or mixed with natural yogurt from 4 months. A child's portion is about a quarter of an avocado.

Berry good

Blueberries are one of the top ‘superfoods'. They're rich in immune-boosting nutrients and children love their naturally sweet taste. They are ideal for weaning mixed in a purée with fruit like apple (suitable from 4m). A portion is a handful and older children will love them added to smoothies or pancakes. Delicious!

Super goodies

Alexander the Great loved bananas so much he introduced them to the Western world. Today, around 140 million of them are eaten every week in the UK. And there's good reason to go bananas for these yellow fruits. They're easy to prepare and packed full of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, B and C plus iron and zinc. They're also a good sauce of fibre. Dietitian Anna Suckling says, ‘Give your baby ½-1 small banana daily as a purée or as a finger food.'

Recipe suggestion: Mash up half a banana with yogurt for a delicious and healthy dessert for your baby.
