Is your baby too fat?

The findings, printed in the British Medical Journal, are based on 24 different studies that examined the relationship between baby growth rates and later obesity.

It found that babies at the highest end of the weight or body mass index scale, or who grow rapidly during infancy, were more likely to develop obesity in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood.

But researcher, Janis Baird, a co-author of the report, says mums shouldn't panic.

‘Although the report says big babies are at risk of obesity, it isn't inevitable.

‘Also, our research has highlighted an area of concern, but we need to carry out more work to assess the size of the risk factor as well as looking at whether a baby is breast or bottlefed, their diet and amount of activity.

Regular weighing at the baby clinic will help keep track of your baby's growth. If you're concerned about your baby or toddler's rapid weight gain, speak to your GP or health visitor about it.
