Do you sing to your baby?
  • Do you sing to your baby?

  • If you've had enough of The Wheels on the Bus, maybe it's time to find some new tunes...

There is nothing more settling for a baby than the sound of her mother's (or father's) calm voice, and singing or chanting has a natural soothing effect. Since the beginning of time, parents have sung lullabies and nursery rhymes to their babies.

But if you're sick of the sound of The Wheels on the Bus, maybe it's time to find fresh inspiration.

A super CD called Thula Mama might be just what you are looking for.

The brainchild of Helen Yeomans, a Devon based singer/songwriter and mother of four, Thula Mama is named after a traditional South African lullaby and translates as 'Hush, be quiet, don't cry'.

It is a selection of songs from across the world, as well as some of Helen's own, sung a capella. It is a beautiful, soothing CD of music which is so catching you'll find it hard to resist joining in.

Helen started her Thula Mama singing group in her home town of Totnes as much for new mums as for babies.

Regular visitors find the soothing tunes of its music help nourish their own needs for company, peace and calm as much as they do their children's needs. ‘The fact that they can soothe their babies with just their voice, whatever their singing ability is very therapeutic for them,’ says Helen.

She's keen to see other groups set up across the country - if you fancy getting involved, visit the Thula Mama website, where you can also listen to CD track samples and buy a copy of the CD.
