Could that cough be asthma?
  • Could that cough be asthma?

  • Have you got a wheezy, coughing baby on your hands and worried it might be asthma?

Over a million UK children are now affected - 85% are allergic to house dust mites, which irritate the lungs, but children may also be allergic to pets and pollen. So what should you do if you're worried about your child?
We asked Rebecca Elder, asthma nurse specialist from Asthma UK, for her advice...

KEEP A DIARY OF SYMPTOMS so that when you see your GP, you can be specific. For example, symptoms that worsen at night and in the morning are a classic sign of asthma.
LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR CHILD SAYS - when they're able to talk, they might complain of a tummy ache. This is often their way of explaining to you they're experiencing chest tightness.
BE AWARE OF FAMILY HISTORY and related conditions. If you or your partner have a history of asthma or allergies, or your child has eczema, they're more susceptible to asthma.
VISIT YOUR GP TO TRY AND GET A DIAGNOSIS, but don't expect an immediate referral to an allergy specialist. Your GP
is most likely to try medication to see if it controls symptoms.
IF YOU WANT MORE HELP AND ADVICE, you can talk to Rebecca and her colleagues on the Asthma UK Advice line, which is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, on 08457 010203.
