  • Will smoking harm our baby?

  • Q Our baby’s due in a month’s time. My partner smokes and I’m worried about how this might affect our baby’s health.

Health visitor Dawn replies: Babies exposed to tobacco smoke are at an increased risk of cot death, asthma, chest infections and general breathing problems, so you are right to be concerned about your partner smoking near your baby.

Nobody should smoke in the house - instead, they should go outside, even in the cold weather. They should also wash their hands and clean their teeth before handling the baby.

Also, avoid taking your baby to smoky places.

It would be even better if your partner tries to quit smoking. There's lots of help available. He could speak to his doctor, your health visitor or call Quitline on 0800 002200.
