  • Will a dummy help settle my baby?

  • Q My 4-week-old baby is very unsettled. Would a dummy help?

Health visitor Dawn replies: Newborns enjoy sucking and most breastfeeding mums know their baby sucks for comfort. As very young babies do not have the co-ordination to suck their fingers or thumbs, a dummy can be useful.

Speech problems can occur if the dummy is given frequently in toddlerhood. So restrict its use to when he is very upset, wean him off the dummy before 12 months and use an ‘orthodontic' dummy, which though it falls out easier is less likely to cause arching of the roof of the mouth.
