  • Why does my son, aged 3, lie?

  • Q: My three-year-old often tells my lies and I don't know how to handle it. He'll pretend another child hit him or he might lie and say his dad gave him permission to do things that are banned. How should I react?

Child psychologist Laverne replies: All children lie at some stage, initially to see what happens and how their parents respond. They'll also lie to stay out of trouble, or to try and get their own way.

You're right to place great importance on your child's honesty. Start by approaching the issue in a low-key way. When you feel that he is not telling the truth, explain that you are interested in what really happened, to try to give your child the courage to explain things to you.

Similarly, if your child claims his dad has given him permission to do something, let him know you understand how much he wants to do the off-limits thing, but explain patiently that you and his dad have said no at the moment.

Use these situations as an opportunity to help your son learn that being truthful is really important and that you are prepared to listen and not blame him when he makes mistakes.
