  • When should I start to discipline my baby?

  • Q My cousin uses ‘time-out’ to discipline her 2 year old and says I should try it with my 18-month-old son, but I feel he’s too young. What do you think?

Psychologist Laverne replies: I agree - 18 months seems young to be using time-out. It is important to remember that our child's social and emotional development is brought about through your love and support, balanced with providing clear boundaries.

When your child misbehaves, the first thing you have to consider is whether his actions can be ignored, or whether another response is necessary.

Time-out is an extended form of ignoring, giving child a clear signal as to the consequence of their behaviour. It also provides you and your child with an opportunity to reflect. With young children, motivational strategies such as star charts and setting clear limits are very effective at helping you see more of the behaviour you want.

You don't sound ready to use time-out, or you feel your son's behaviour doesn't need it. Stick with what feels right. You'll know when to try a new approach.
