  • When should I start potty training?

  • Q All my friends are currently potty training their toddlers. But my 18-month-old son is in no hurry and neither am I. Should I be following the crowd?

Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus replies: Many parents find potty training stressful, but I'm pleased you feel able to resist the urge to rush your child, as it's a crucial stage of development.

As a guide, most children have the skills to start potty training between 18 and 24 months. I encourage parents to relax about it and look for clues that their child is ready, like drier periods during the day, disliking the feeling of a wet nappy or stopping what he's doing when having a poo.

If a child is showing signs he's ready, choose a time that feels right for both of you such as a holiday period or a quiet time when you can be around to deal with the inevitable accidents, as well as the successes. Remain calm, be clear about what you expect and introduce the potty gradually. Greet each success with lots of praise and keep in mind that progress may be slow but he will master this stage, and he'll feel very proud once he has.
