  • We're ready for sex again

  • Q I gave birth to my daughter about five weeks ago and my partner and I feel ready for sex again. We’re still slightly apprehensive though. Is there anything we need to think about beforehand?

Health visitor Dawn replies: The first time you have sex after the birth of your baby can be scary. Most couples worry it may hurt, feel uncomfortable or not be the same as it used to be. Take things slowly, find a comfortable position and both be prepared for the fact it might feel different. Postnatal women tend to be dry during sex, even more so when breastfeeding, so use a lubricant like KY Jelly to ease discomfort.
Remember to use contraception even if you are breastfeeding, unless of course you're ready for the next baby. Talking of babies, your daughter is certain to wake up, so also be prepared for interruptions.
