  • She isn't feeding properly

  • My daughter is 11 weeks old. When she was born she had problems feeding and was put on Gaviscon. She has days when she'll only take a small amount, then cries out in pain. I am feeding her every three hours to try and get as much milk into her as possible but feel like I'm getting nowhere - can you help?

Health Visitor Dawn Kelly says: 'Acid relux', also known as oesophageal reflux, is where the sphincter action of teh diaphragm does not work as effectively as it should and allows gastric acid to rise back up the oesophagus (gullet), causing pain and sometimes vomiting. The medical term in the UK is GORD (Gastro-Oesphageal Reflux Disorder).

In babies, the sphincter action of the diaphragm isn't fully developed. During the first year, it gradually gets stronger andher chance of having reflux decreases. Around 50% of babies will get some reflux, but only for a small precentage is it a real problem. At the age of 10 months the number is down to about one in 20 babies. Simple measures such as holding your baby upright for 20 minutes after feeding should help andit is worth trying smaller, more frequent, feeds. In severe cases, it can be worth trying antacids (or feed thickeners if not breastfeeding). They're available on prescription and help to reduce gas and restrict the flow of stomach contents back to the gullet. If symptoms do not improve or your baby does not gain weight, ask your GP to refer you to a specialist.
