  • My toddler refuses to eat properly

  • Q My other two children weren’t a problem. This two-year-old toddler is making mealtimes a misery.

Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus: Although it might not appear to be a major issue, eating problems can bring an entire family to its knees. You say your older children were fine - this is proof in itself you can overcome this problem.
Perhaps you expected your youngest to naturally follow the rhythm of the rest of the family? But as with all aspects of parenting, things don't always run smoothly. We all eat in slightly different ways. Maybe she prefers to ‘graze' throughout the day rather than tuck into main meals.
Keep a diary to record what's happening - it will also help you analyse your own behaviour. The answers to these questions may help you work out what's going on:
  • Does it happen at every mealtime? Or just one meal in particular?
  • Have you tried to give her smaller portions?
  • Does she snack her way through the day?
  • How much attention does she get for not eating?
Carry on with what you're doing and make sure you keep presenting the same foods - don't give in to her whims but praise her when she's well behaved. If you're still worried, make sure you speak to your health visitor or GP
