  • My toddler is tired all the time

  • Q: My 2-year-old boy often complains of being tired. He sleeps 12 hours at night and then up to two hours after lunch. Once up and about he’s full of beans. Is it normal for toddlers to sleep this much?

Health visitor Dawn says: We need to take great care in saying how much sleep is too much or too little, as the amount a child sleeps can vary.

As a very broad guide, most two year olds will have an 11-12 hour sleep at night and then an hour or two in the afternoon, often following lunch.

If your son says he’s still tired and wants to go back to bed, then he probably is, and you should let him have an extra hour or two.

As he plays well, I doubt there is anything to worry about, although a trip to your GP will well help settle any fears.

Your child may wish for some ‘Mummy time’ – I know that if one of my little ones says she’s tired during the day, it often means she wants a cuddle and some time out from boisterous play.
