  • My one-year-old can't drink from a cup

  • Q: My son is just over a year old and still can't drink water from a beaker or sipper cup. How do I wean him from the bottle?

Health visitor Dawn says: This is a common problem and most parents try varying types of beaker before their little one finally gives up the bottle.

Most babies can start moving away from the bottle at around 6 months.

Your son may find cups with soft spouts better to begin with, before moving on to a hard spout and then no lid at all.

You may wish to try a Doidy cup - a slanting cup, which is easier to drink from than a conventional cup - a sports bottle or maybe a straw.

'Non-spill' beakers are often quite hard to suck, which may put your son off. You could try a cup or beaker with his favourite character on, too.

It may be that he just isn't keen on water - if so, try giving him a tiny bit of milk or some very diluted juice in a beaker or cup - and keep persevering.
