  • My 5-year-old son has special needs

  • Q He has frequent tantrums and it’s hard for me to devote time to his 2-year-old brother. Help!

Psychologist Laverne replies: In my experience, parents often feel family life revolves around a child with special needs and tend to worry about spending less time with the other children in the family. Recognise that you're in a difficult situation, and try to show them how you want them to behave. During the day, set aside time to play with your 2 year old - if your 5 year old tries to disrupt this, deal with him calmly and clearly, so that your younger son can see that you will not tolerate inappropriate behaviour.
And encourage the children to play together, really noticing and praising them when they do get along.
In the evenings, stick to a plan. Have bath time early to settle both boys and then play a low-key game or listen to music with them before getting them off to sleep. Make sure you feel supported, too - look after yourself and if possible try to ensure that you have help on some nights just to take the pressure off a little.
