  • Is there a problem with baby's sight?

  • Q I bought my week-old baby a funky black and white mobile. I couldn’t wait to see his reaction as it dangled over his cot but he’s not remotely interested in it. I thought black and white was best for this age. Could there be something wrong with his sight?

Health visitor Dawn replies: Mobiles are great for stimulating babies and monotone shades, or bright contrasting colours, are easier to see than pale pastels.

It may be just the position of the mobile.

When lying down, babies rarely focus straight ahead, they tend to look either right or  left. Also, mobiles appeal to babies over 4 weeks old - newborns are more fascinated with your face and your expressions.

If your baby can focus on your face for a second or two I doubt anything is wrong with his sight, but if you're concerned talk to your GP or health visitor.
