  • Is formula milk giving my baby eczema?

  • My 5-month-old has been diagnosed with atopic eczema on his tummy, arms and legs. I still breastfeed but also give him formula, which I think might be making it worse. Do you think changing his formula milk would help?

Nutritionist Caroline replies: Atopic eczema is common in childhood and can begin at around 2-4 months. It's characterised by patches of red flaky or irritable skin. Atopic means an extra sensitivity to substances (allergens) which can include house dust mites and certain foods.

There's no harm in trying a new formula, but research shows it's unlikely to make any difference, unless your baby is allergic to the cow's milk in formula. However, don't give soy-based formula unless advised to do so by a health professional.

Discuss your concerns with your doctor before making any big changes. They may prescribe a hydrolysed formula milk or advise you to exclusively breastfeed, if you can.
