  • Is baby ready for a big bed?

  • Q: I'd like to move my one-and-a-half-year-old son from his cot into his own bed in the next few months, before my next baby is born. Is a baby his age old enough to cope with the change to a bed, and should I swap his regular sleeping bag for blankets or a quilt at the same time?

Health visitor Dawn replies: I'm sure he is getting a bit big for his cot now, and it's a good idea to get him used to a toddler bed before the new baby arrives, when he may feel ousted!

I transferred my own girls when they were both around one-and-a-half, and had no problems.

Toddler beds are close to the floor so your child can get in and out easily. If you put one side against a wall and use a bed guard that runs along most of the length, he can't fall out.

You could keep him in his sleeping bag initially, but as he's likely to try to climb in and out of bed, it may trip him up. Alternatively, you could take him shopping to buy a duvet of his choice - with a favourite character - for his new big bed.
