Is a home birth safe?

Lead Midwife for Argyll and Bute, NHS Highland, Joanne Thorpe says: Yes, it's safe to give birth at home as long as you've had a normal, healthy pregnancy. However, if you're considered 'high risk', for example, if your baby is lying sideways instead of head down, it may not be an option.

Tell your midwife as soon as possible if you'd like a home birth, so she can assess you.

Research shows you're more relaxed giving birth at home, so you're less likely to need pain relief. It's also not as messy as you might think, and your midwife will help clear up afterwards.
