  • How will my toddler cope with life after a new baby?

  • Q I have a 2-year-old son and I’m expecting my second baby in two months’ time. Once the new baby is here, I’m planning to continue taking my son to his childminder, even though I’ll be at home. I feel the routine will make starting nursery easier, which he is due to do later this year. But will he feel pushed out by the new baby?

Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus replies: Keep your childminder as routine is important to children, but in the run up to your due date why not pick up your son from the childminder a little earlier and take trips to the park or have a lovely tea time. Use that time to talk about the new baby and say how you know your son will be a helpful big brother. Also, involve him as much as possible prior to the birth.

Once the new baby arrives, try not to disrupt your son's routine, so stick to set mealtimes, bathtimes and bedtimes. Be prepared for negative changes in his behaviour, though. But if you're content with what you're offering your son, he will be too.
